Cognitive Skills

Cognitive skills are the foundation for learning.  At the top of the chart below are the goals we have as parents and educators for our children. We want them to get as far as they can and want to academically, to get a good and satisfying job that supports them and their family, to be a healthy and a contributing member of society. The next tier depicts the focus of most schools – on reading writing, math, science, the rest of the curriculum; these days school also focus on social and emotional learning.

What most education doesn’t address is the cognitive infrastructure for learning and behavior – all the skills that our brains use to take in, understand, organize, store and retrieve information from the world around us. If the cognitive skills represented in the three bottom tiers of this chart aren’t working accurately and efficiently, learning can be a struggle.
