STEM and SEL: Inseparable Partners

Recent media coverage of research at Google reinforces the abundant studies on what employers seek from their employees. Technical skills may be important, but so-called soft skills are also indispensable. An article authored by Betsy Hill, president of BrainWare Learning Company, published in bothSTEM for Women Magazine and STEM Magazine, explores why Google place such e critical importance of “soft skills” (social and emotional competence) for success at technology firms like Google. The research has engendered controversy. How can anyone say that SEL is more important than STEM, expertise in science, technology, engineering, and math? Hill concludes that STEM and SEL are not in competition. They are not even separate but equal. They don’t sit side by side. They are built on a common set of cognitive processes and therefore mutually reinforcing, synergistic and inseparable.
