Problem-Solving in Multi-Tiered Systems of Support

Whether you call it RtI, MTSS or something else, the underlying principle is the same. It’s all about problem-solving – about getting to the root of the problem, and finding a solution designed to address that problem, in a holistic, student-centered way. It requires educators to do what every problem-solver has to do – look at cause and effect, base decisions on data, exclude potentially erroneous conclusions and monitor decisions for effectiveness.

The combination of RtI (focused on academics) and PBIS (focused on behavior) under the MTSS umbrella is one step toward a holistic view of the student. However, there are other reasons why a student may be struggling academically or with self-regulation or other behavioral issues. In fact, there are common underlying cognitive processes, referred to as executive functions, that are critical in both domains.

In this webinar, we review the common cognitive underpinning for academic and SEL success, discuss how to use cognitive assessments for problem analysis and decision-making, and tell some stories of how educators have gotten to the root problem. PS, Betsy will be sharing the problem-solving tips sheteaches her MBA students, who struggle just like everyone else with defining a root problem.
