Grit, Growth Mindset and the Backlash Against Both
EdCircuit has reprinted a popular article originally published by the Learning Counsel on grit and growth mindset written by Betsy Hill, president of BrainWare Learning. As Hill explains, both terms have been extolled and then criticized. And while the valence of the terms is different, they share the same goal. The attraction for educators is clear – getting students to keep at the hard tasks of learning – but they both fall short for largely the same reason. Neither really tells educators how to help students build learning capacity and their confidence in taking on challenging learning tasks.
