SUMMARY OF FINDINGS
During the 2022–23 school year, Maple Crest Middle School in Kokomo, IN, decided to focus on a group of students who were identified, based on cognitive assessment, as having strong reasoning skills and weak executive functions, and who were not performing at proficiency on academic measures. Maple Crest Middle School implemented the BrainWare SAFARI cognitive training program with reasonable fidelity to the recommended protocol with the student selected to participate in the program during the 2022-2023 school year. Students demonstrated significant cognitive growth, especially in executive functions following their cognitive training. They also showed academic improvements indicative of closing the gap to grade-level proficiency on both iReady and ILEARN assessments, in both Math and English Language Arts.
These results suggest that comprehensive integrated cognitive training can be a powerful lever for uncovering academic potential and success for students whose executive function challenges mask their true capabilities.
