This is the picture of a pioneer… It’s hard to know how to start this post because it means that a truly amazing woman and mentor to so many educators and parents is no longer with us. Dr.. Patricia Wolfe … Pat. Roger and Betsy have been blessed with her friendship and support … and inspiration to continue sharing the science of learning, the importance of cognitive skills, and our commitment to helping every child (and adult) become the best learners they can be.
Dr. Patricia (Pat) Wolfe, a pioneering educator whose work helped bridge the worlds of neuroscience and classroom practice, passed away on December 19, 2025, with family members and close friends by her side. At 91, she is remembered as a devoted mother, grandmother, teacher, mentor and internationally respected voice in the field of brain-based education.
A native of Missouri, Pat completed her undergraduate work in Oklahoma and postgraduate studies in California. She dedicated her life to understanding how people learn, and to equipping educators with that knowledge to transform their classrooms. Her career literally spanned decades and continents, beginning as a public school teacher in Los Angeles, evolving into leadership roles including staff development trainer for the Upland, California School District and Director of Instruction for the Napa County Office of Education.
Pat launched her company, Mind Matters, Inc., in January 1990, as an independent consultant, speaking to educators, administrators and parents across the United States and more than 50 countries worldwide. She served as a lead trainer for the International Principal Training Center in Rome and London, and her workshops on effective teaching, mind styles, classroom management and peer coaching influenced thousands of teachers and school leaders.
Pat’s brilliance was in her ability to make complex scientific ideas accessible, practical and inspiring. Her work helped usher in a new era of brain-compatible teaching, and she remained a passionate advocate for research-informed education throughout her life.
Her landmark book, Brain Matters: Translating Research Into Classroom Practice, became a foundational text for educators seeking to understand the implications of neuroscience for teaching and learning.
Pat’s unique blend of sharing expertise with an engaging presentation style led to appearances in videotape series, satellite broadcasts, radio programs, local TV, and professional development for organizations such as ASCD and the National Staff Development Council. Yet despite her international reach, she remained deeply connected to the individual educators she taught, mentored and encouraged, including a remarkable community of educators who completed advanced training with Pat, proudly called the ‘Brainy Bunch.’ What began as professional development evolved into a vibrant network of colleagues and friends who carried forward Pat’s vision for research-informed, brain-compatible teaching.
A Napa Valley resident for over 40 years, Pat was active in church, community endeavors, charities, professional organizations and served on numerous boards. She cherished her family above all else, and spent her ‘retirement’ years at The Meadows of Napa Valley, surrounded by people she loved most.
Pat leaves behind a daughter, Andria Taylor, a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Terri Wolfe, and her grandchildren, Kyra and Alex, who brought her immense joy. She also leaves a global community of educators who continue to be shaped by her insights, generosity, and enduring legacy.
To all those who knew Pat, she will be remembered most for her warmth, curiosity, humor and an unwavering belief in the potential of every learner. Her life’s work lives on in every classroom where a teacher pauses to consider how the brain learns—and in every student whose potential is nurtured because of the knowledge she helped bring to the world.
