A Time to Ask Students to Think about Misbehaving

 

Often it is more effective to engage students in coming up with their own norms rather than giving them a set of rules for behavior. One teacher helped her students get ready for a field trip to a museum by asking them how they could be sure they would be kicked out of the museum. The students were then able to connect their ideas for misbehavior with why the museum would ask them to leave. The reverse of the misbehavior was appropriate behavior and reverse thinking can be a powerful way to get students to focus on cause and effect.
